Bespoke work

Commission a chart

Four bespoke plates a season, taken in the order the surveys are approved. The commission covers the survey, the plate, the first eight impressions and the working proofs.

How it runs

  • Weeks 1 to 2

We take your water: a stretch of coast, a river reach, a set of race marks. Old photographs and family recollection count as survey material. We say what we can and cannot verify.

  • Weeks 3 to 7

The field survey. Depths by lead line where the water allows, soundings fixed against shoremarks, every doubt written down as it happens.

  • Weeks 8 to 16

Engraving. You see the working proof at the halfway mark and hold a right of refusal on it once. After that the plate is committed.

  • Delivery

First eight impressions, the working proof, and the plate itself if you want it, waxed and boxed. The archive keeps nothing of yours without asking.

  • Half the fee opens the ledger, half closes it. If the survey finds your water dull, we will say so and suggest what would make the plate worth engraving. The 2026 figure is £3,800 for a single plate, £6,400 for a pair.

    Open the ledger

Demonstration form: nothing is sent anywhere and no reply will come. A real house would answer within two tides.
