THE INLAND SEA · WARTIME REVISION, 1948
Plate 132 · 1948
The Inland Sea
The Inland Sea began as a pencil sketch on the back of a ration book, drawn by the junior partner while waiting out a fog. The 1948 plate keeps the pencil's hesitations on purpose: the shorelines wobble where the fog lifted unevenly, and the note in the lower margin reads, in his hand, fog again, better luck Tuesday. It is the only plate in the house signed by its surveyor twice.
