THE LONG SOUND · TIDAL ATLAS PLATE IX
Plate 87 · 1931
The Long Sound
Tidal Atlas Plate IX took three winters. The surveyors rowed the Sound on slack water and again at full flood, timing drifts with a pocket chronometer and a cork float, and the engraving carries their patience: sixty-one drift arrows, each one timed and signed in the margin by the man who threw it. It is the most asked-for plate in the catalogue and the slowest to print.
