WINTER FAIRWAY · ICE LIMITS, SEASON OF 1959
Plate 419 · 1959
Winter Fairway
The winter of 1959 froze the outer fairway for eleven weeks. The plate records every buoy's fate in a code the harbour board still keeps framed: a filled diamond for froze in, an open diamond for broke loose, and a small engraved coffin, used once, for the mark the ice took. It sold steadily to skippers for a decade and then stopped being reprinted, which is why the second state is the harder one to find.
